The Greves | Kansas City Family Photographer | Sunrise Session in Olathe, KS

Have you ever heard of golden hour before? If you haven’t yet, it’s basically the hour before sunset, when the sun is lower in the sky and creates softer golden tones VS the harsher brighter tones in the afternoon. This is typically the ideal shooting time for portraits as the lighting is the most flattering and can be the most beautiful, especially at sunset. The problem is, depending on the time of year, golden hour can conflict with dinner time and/or bed time for families with young kids. As a family photographer, I always structure my sessions around what will give my clients the best experience, as good memories lead to the best pictures, but sometimes I feel bad that we can’t get them those magical golden shots they want because of the time of day. My solution? Shooting in the other golden hour, sunrise. The truth is, many young kids wake up pretty early anyways and are often the freshest and happiest in the mornings. So we get the best of both worlds, happy kids and stunning golden sunrise lighting to start the session. The Greve Family is the perfect example of how gorgeous shooting at sunrise can be. We got the most amazing golden light for their session this fall in Olathe, KS along with a happy smiling little boy and lots of sweet moments of them as a family. Scroll to see:

I have to say, my favorite picture is this last one with that cute little hand reminding his parents that he’s to be apart of EVERY picture, even the romantic ones haha!
