Kansas City Senior Photographer Downtown Overland Park Session EffJay Photography006.jpg

Fact: I don’t prefer to shoot in the really popular places to shoot. Parking can be a hinderance, they can be over crowded so we have to eat up shoot time waiting for spots to be free, and sometimes it can feel like you’re getting the same pictures everyone else is getting. If my clients have a specific connection to one of those areas, then by all means we fight the crowds! But more often than not, they only suggest them because thats all they really know, and that’s where I come in.

Any time we’ve moved to a new area, I immediately start scoping out the lesser known spots. They’re usually not hidden or completely unknown, they’re just not the really “famous” ones that you see when you google “photo shoot locations” in any given area. One of my favorite things to do is to shoot in the suburban downtowns. If you want concrete, architecture, and different less nature like backdrops, you DO NOT have to venture to the busy areas of downtown Kansas City. You can find all of those things and even more by knowing where to look right in the suburbs.

This brings us to my amazing shoot with Miss Caroline. Number 1: Isn’t she a doll? Her smile is just gorgeous in all forms, from a soft smile to laughing, and it was a joy to capture it! She actually wanted a mix of nature and city in her senior session, so we started in Downtown Overland Park and then finished her session at a little park just down the street. Downtown OP was almost completely empty as it was after all of the stores had closed for the day, so we had the place to ourselves to get creative! It’s always such a fun part of my job to take something as simple as a plain set of concrete stairs and turn them into the perfect backdrop to showcase my subject. Downtown Overland Park gave me many of those opportunities, I just had to make sure I was looking with the right intentions. So take away: Don’t be afraid to pick less crowded and less used locations! You never know what treasures you’ll find.

Thank you again Caroline for trusting me to capture this chapter in your life and being such a natural in front of the camera! So thankful to have met you, your mom and sister!!
